Transiting Madrid Airport

The journey from international arrival to domestic flights.

I find the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport to be one of the best in the world. And while it is relatively straightforward to go from international arrivals in Terminal T4 to the domestic flights in Terminal 4, for the first-timer the journey can seem daunting. So, this page is a photo guide by which familiarity and expectation can be had.

Arrival

The journey begins when you disembark from your flight.

After a long walk from the Jet Bridge back-and-forth up ramps you will enter the arrival hall. The hallway is very long and most often our flights arrive near to the far end from where you need to go, which is to Flight Connections.

Here, the angled columns are blue. The color transitions, and further on they are green and then yellow.

The signage to Flight connections is clear.

Finally, you will exit the long hallway -- continue to follow the signage for Flight connections.

Although this new wide hallway says you are going to Flight connections, you will actually enter the plaza for Passport Control.

Passport Control

You aren't truly yet in Spain until you are admitted.

Unless you are an EU resident, you need to go to All passports.

Sometimes the plaza can be quite crowded and the queue is long.

Eventually, you will get to the head of the single queue and you need to go to a queue for one of the stations. Pay attention to which agents are moving people quickly and go to one of those.

Exit Passport Control and go to Baggage and exit. You need next to go to Terminal 4 for domestic flights. You get there by taking a train.

Train from Terminal 4S to Terminal 4

Welcome to Spain. Now, onward to the main terminal.

I suggest you take the lift (elevator) as it is a long way down to the lowest level where you will find the train that will take you to Terminal 4.

Sometimes the train plaza can be quite crowded. The areas for the doors are well marked.

I find that one of the middle doors is best for exiting. But if you want to observe, go to the fornt car, which is rightmost.

You exit the train and must go up. I suggest you take the lift (elevator) as it is a long way up to the departures floor of Terminal 4.

Terminal 4 Departures

Take a deep sigh - you can enjoy your time in the terminal.

There is lots of shopping and places to get a café or a bite to eat. Departure times and gates are posted about 30 to 40 minutes before the flight's departure time.
